Caracalla, Phrygia, Hadrianopolis-Sebaste, BMC 4 (?), AE-21,

I have this Caracalla coin from Phrygia, Hadrianopolis-Sebaste.

The BMC 4 and SNG Cop 407, described "Laureate, draped and cuirassed..."
I do not find like this "Radiate and cuirassed..." (like my coin) bust in any reference...

Any help is appreciated.

The radiate bust is very unusual. No radiate bust for Caracalla  at ISEGRIM, BnF, Mantis Coins, acsearch, asia minor coins, Berliner Münzkabinett

Hi, Ralf,

Thank you,

Yes I find so many examples with laureate busts, but not the radiate???, that was the source of my question,  :-\ :azn:

Maybe unpublished  ;) :D

I forgot. I found your coin, sold in 2007.

https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=377351

You should send it to RPC.

In the description of the acsearch link given by Shanxi above there is mentioned a reference "IW 6069" which is the "Inventaire sommaire de la collection Waddington" by Ernest Babelon: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k399052q/f391.image
Unfortunately the description of the obverse just says "Caracalla" and not more  :-\.

But there is a book by Achim Lichtenberger, "Severus Pius Augustus. Studien zur sakralen Repräsentation und Rezeption der Herrschaft des Septimius Severus und seiner Familie (193–211 n. Chr.)" where he says on page 236 "Auch eine Bronze von Hadrianopolis zeigt auf der Vorderseite Caracalla mit Strahlenkrone." ("Also a coin from Hadrianopolis shows on the obverse a radiate Caracalla"). And here he refers to Coll. Waddington 6069.

The coin itself (Waddington 6069) is now in the BnF and can be seen here: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b8526966k
It is hard to see whether the head is radiate or not, but the rest does match. So this is probably the type of the coin presented here.

Altamura

Edit: I forgot the link to the book  :-\: https://books.google.de/books?id=WpkEL0D_hroC&lpg=PA236&ots=VD_sLpAW5R&dq=caracalla%20strahlenkrone%20bronze%20hadrianopolis&hl=de&pg=PA236#v=onepage&q=caracalla%20strahlenkrone%20bronze%20hadrianopolis&f=false

I see no trace of a radiate crown, and looking for the letters (size and position) and the loops of  band of the laurel wreath, this is very likely a obverse die match with this laureate example:

You are right, and on the coin from Roma Numismatics there is clearly no radiate crown. So Lichtenberger was wrong  :-\.

Thank you again, Ralf, and Altamura, I also realized that coin does not have Radiate bust...

Another Interesting question, the bust is draped and cuirassed or cuirassed only?
