For those that did not notice, this was the cover coin in the latest DNW Auction where it hammered for 460,000 GBP + 20% fees. Two floor bidders and one internet bidder provided quite a spirited bidding session. A live auction feed was provided on the DNW website.

For those interested in some of the legalities, it might be worth clicking on the links on the blog posting for the proposed changes to the English law dealing with treasure finds (such as this coin, which did not fall under the current provisions). The proposals tighten up what is private versus public, but still seem to fall well within the bounds of a rational system.

Maybe there's a Brexit reference in there somewhere, but I think what is meant is that the UK coin-finding laws are waaaaay more generous to detectorists and landowners than most other places in Europe and that results in more reported and documented finds.

Actually, I meant English. In fairness, it also covers Wales & Northern Ireland, but Scotland has its own laws on this.

The laws I was thinking of. After Brexit UK is still in Europe, even though not in EU.
