Dupondius of Severus Alexander
« on: March 16, 2019, 12:05:05 pm »
Here's a scarce dupondius from the second year of Alexander's reign, 3rd issue from the mint.   Surface is shiny and I suspect it has been treated with renaissance wax

Obverse: (IMP CAES M A)VR SEV ALEXANDER AVG
Bust radiate right, draped and cuirassed
Reverse: P M TR P II COS P P, SC left and right in field
Providentia standing front, head left, legs crossed, leaning on column, holding in right hand wand over globe at feet left and in left hand cornucopiae
BMC 125 variant rev C 244 (Asselin Coll.), RIC 405
Weight, 8.89g; die axis, 6h.
