Divus Constantine with Aequitas?
« on: March 11, 2019, 07:19:31 pm »
I'm hoping to have this right:

Divus Constantine with an Aequitas reverse?

My opinion:
Constantine I, posthumous, struck by Constantius II, Antioch, 337-340 AD. AE4.
Obv: CONSTANTINVS PT AVGG; veiled bust right; Rev: IVST VEN MEM; Aequitas in long dress standing facing, head turned left, holding scales.Mintmark SMANT. mRIC VIII Antioch 64; Failmetzer 390.

Visible:
Obverse: DVCONSTA....PTAVGG, Constantine I, veiled, facing right.
Reverse: Aequitas holding scales, facing right. Dirty words around.

I'm afraid to clean this coin because it looks quite nice under the dirt. The photos make it look less sharp than it is in hand. If I clean it, what would you recommend? The dirt is softer than my thumbnail.

A good nylon brush ought remove loose dirt and not hurt the metal.

I am afraid of spoiling the nice patina as well, but so many of the features remain buried. I would like to confirm that I identified it properly, and that it is not some subspecies of this line as well. Your thoughts?
