VESPASIAN DENARIUS WITH CURIOUS REVERSE.
« on: March 07, 2019, 09:30:08 am »
Hi all,

A while ago I got a curious denarius. With obverse in the name of Vespasian and a reverse that does not correspond. In this case, the reverse corresponds to an Aurea issue coined by Antoninus Pius in the name of Marcus Aurelius.

Regarding the technical data:

Diameter: 18 mm.
Weight: 3.46 gr.

In my opinion, it is a hybrid denarius coined by forgers, although the art of the piece seems totally official. The explanation? ... a chronological separation of 100 years between both dies? a forger that, at the time of the Antoninus Pius, designed a die from a denarius of Vespasianus that would continue circulating?

I await your opinions.

Best regards from Spain,

Fernando.

In my opinion probably the work of a modern forger, not an ancient one.

It was too complicated to be true.

Thanks Mr. Clay and Mapila,
