A New Nabataean Overstrike
« on: March 03, 2019, 11:58:48 pm »
This remarkable example of a 'proto-Nabataean' issue, overstruck on a Ptolemaic bronze undertype, has just been added to the PtolemyBronze.com 'coin photos' page in the section of "Ptolemy II - III - Proto-Natabaean Overstrikes" (which displays 6 more examples).  Especially noteworthy on this specimen is it appears to bear the 'harpa' mintmark of the Joppa mint (Svoronos 819).  Be sure to visit the site to see the other related ones.  These overstrikes are all interesting but seldom is it possible to be certain of the precise attribution of the undertype.  For more information about this early Nabataean coinage, see the article by Rachel Barkay (Numismatic Chronicle, 2011) - The Earliest Nabataean Coinage.  This specimen is about 17mm diameter, 2.47 grams.

I humbly request an identification of the overstrike and the under type, if possible (as far as what the figures are).

The types are fairly clear.  On the image on the left, you can see the head of Zeus to right of the Ptolemaic host coin and the standing figure of Nike from the overstrike.  The right image is more difficult, but visible of the host coin are the body standing eagle to, part of the legend, and in the field to the left of the eagle is the harpa which is the mark of the Joppa mint.  The overstrike here is difficult to discern but the overstrike type is a helmeted head of Athena to right.  The nose is apparent and other traces of the head, poorly struck, can be made out.
