Constantius II solidus transfer die fake?
« on: February 19, 2019, 08:30:50 pm »
Hello all,

The first coin is in my collection and was purchased from a reputable auction house. The weight is 4.48g, diameter 21mm and die axis 11h. It has a provenance back to 1999.

The second coin pictured is from a current, ongoing auction.

When I looked closer I found disturbing similarities between the two coins. Pls note the almost identical edges on both coins, such as

obverse 1h
obverse 5h
reverse 4h

Are one or both of these coins transfer dies fakes?

EDIT: I could not find a match in the Fake coin reports.

Hello all,

Just two more points that occurred to me:

Wrong terminology... the two coins are more likely to be cast fakes, rather than transfer die fakes.

The two coins are not the same coin in different pictures... look at the deposits in the obverse pearl diadem, and the reddish toning on the reverse.

I have cycled problem areas at dotted border which are identical on all specimens which is impossible.
It is possible that one of them is authentic host

I guess picture 3 is your coin

picture 4 is the possibly authentic host

Thanks for confirming my suspicions Din X. It is what I feared. I will have to contact the auction house.
