Draped or not?
« on: February 10, 2019, 03:29:05 pm »
Hello,

I have hard to classify this coin: Cuirassed only or draped and cuirassed? (RIC 216)

The shoulder strap proves that it is a bust, draped and cuirassed,

Best regards

Thank you,

therefore what is a only cuirassed bust for Gordian III? This one is draped too: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=2088805

If you look at ac search for Gordian III antioch, absolutly all sale houses misdescribe the bust... right?

That bust is cuirassed only, in my opinion.

Jochen, what do you mean by the "shoulder strap"?

At the first looking, i thinked it was cuirassed only too. I think he is talking about the arc of circle above the shoulder.

For a cuirassed bust, where to look? the little lines on the shoulder can indicate a cuirass but if this point disapeared how we do?

Apart from the flaps on the shoulder, the scales on the back are also typical for the cuirass.

Also sometimes a Medusa head on the breastplate, when the bust is seen from the front.

Shoulder strap yellow. But you are right with cuirassed only.
