Let the Games Begin!
« on: February 05, 2019, 06:11:44 am »
When I made the decision last summer to collect Flavian bronze after years of collecting exclusively silver, this Domitian Secular Games as was topmost on my want list. It finally arrived over the weekend. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-153089

The coin came with this neat old coin envelope from Heinrich Pilartz.

There is an article about him in the german Wikipedia. He was not only a dealer but also an important collector.

A tetradrachm on his tombstone  :)

David,

congtars on starting this amazing series.

I think you already know the article by Melanie Grunow Sobocinski: Ludi Saeculares Visualizing Ceremony.

Starting from the observation that RIC 623 is much more common than the other AE coins of the series, she deduces that only this coin was minted in large quantities and circulated throughout the territory of the empire.

On the other hand, the others were perhaps distributed to the public during the celebrations, since they would have been found only on Italian territory.

Thanks Alberto! I acquired the silver coins from the series years ago, now it is time to begin the hunt for the bronze.

And yes, I did indeed consult Sobocinski's article. I think she did a wonderful job of putting her case forward.
