The Rare Trachy SBCV 2225
« on: April 22, 2019, 05:00:18 am »
Shown below are two examples of the very rare trachy SBCV 2225.

The top coin was sold by Stacks in 2009 and the bottom coin is currently on offer from a well- known auction house.

In DOC IV this type is attributed to Demetrius Comnenus-Ducas of Thessalonica, but this seems unlikely to me given the large size of these coins and the lack of any small module versions, and so I suspect this type may have come from Arta rather than Thessalonica, although exactly who issued it is unclear.

Very Interesting read, Was Hendy's attribution based solely on legend? Was their any record on where the coins Hendy attributed  were  found?

I am not disagreeing, just curios.

No ruler is shown or named on this trachy - the obverse is simply a standard "O Emmanuel" type, while the reverse text refers to the archangel Michael.

Hendy's attribution of the type to Demetrius is simply guesswork.

As stated on my website, this type has been found at Arta in Epirus and at Aghios Achilleios in north west Macedonia. Hendy may have known about the latter find, but probably not the former.
