Nicolo Onyx Gemstone Serapis Caesarea Maritima

Hi all.  I have been making new photos of some of our gems in the gallery.  Here is an amazingly small and beautiful portrait of Serapis.  It is impossible to say if this was of local manufacture, but Serapis was one of the most venerated of deities at Caesarea in the 2nd and 3rd Centuries CE, appearing often on coins from Hadrian to Volusian.  Comments or corrections are always welcome.  V-drome

Roman Gem Stone
Caesarea Maritima
Intaglio Nicolo Onyx
Blue, black, white.
1st -2nd Century CE
Bust of Serapis to left.
6.5 x 5 x 2mm.  Profile F4 var.
slightly concave bottom, flat top,
upright oval.  Extremely small
gem, engraved with great detail.
