I think there must have been a major
hoard of these found. One
auction house was offering group lots of them with
test cuts. I'm a
Roman collector, not Greek, but they looked interesting enough that I picked up a small lot. What I found after receiving the coins was that in a group of eight, there were four different variants of the
reverse and one of the
obverse. I'm sure there must be many other variants, but for the reverses in this group:
1. Triskeles with no lettering.
2. Triskeles with E-
3. Triskeles with
lion walking left and
, with
turtle in upper right.
4. Triskeles with
lion walking left and what looks like to my old eyes as E-
-T-E-E-
above
For the
obverse, one of the coins has what appears to be an L behind the warrior's front
leg and some unidentified symbol before it. The
reverse on this one is a plain triskeles.
Even with the
test cuts, I found these to be interesting. I need to do some further research.
Best,
Larry
