Magnentius non-standard legend Chi-Rho type
« on: January 04, 2019, 05:53:13 am »
Dear Collectors,
recently I bought this coin:
Magnentius Chi-Rho type centenionalis with no standard revesre legend:
The "normal" legend: SALVSDDNNAVGETCAES
but as I recognize it after the part of "SALVSDDNN" the subsequent letters are not the ordinary one and I cannot recognize the following 2 - 3 letters,
but the last four letters are clearly: DEAV not CAES.
Or maybe I red them wrongly?
Other "problem" with sign A (alfa) and ω (omega): the letter "A" obviously is an "N". Maybe it can be read as a distorted "A"?
The third thing: the mint mark. TPP? Is there such mint mark? Mabye TR? TRP? Trier?

Fake coin? Or greek influence? Or illiterate engraver?

7,8gr
23-26mm

Thank you for your help and answer,
Gabor

These examples are what is known as barbarous, contemporary unofficial issues.
These are common during this period, but yours is desirable because of the motif and condition.
Usually, the legends are blundered or of crude style.
Nice example!

Many years ago I pulled a coin with obverse destroyed out of a junk box and mounted it as a necklace for my wife.  I assume the obverse was Magnentius.  The reverse is obviously barbarous with spelling problems but it shares with yours the N for A.  These do not come from Siscia but this one has a clear mintmark.

Anything goes with barbarous.

Nice.  One wonders whether the "mint mark" indicates it was made in Eastern Europe but someone who liked the Western type but was more familiar with Siscia mint marks.....

In fact mint mark could be read as LSLG (Lyons, 2d officina) and not .. S I S..

Thanks, I had not thought of that.  It is still barbarous but I won't have to feel bad mounting the only known coin of a mint. :'(
