Rare Titus As
« on: January 02, 2019, 01:08:55 am »
I was very excited about my latest arrival! Listed in RIC as unique (R3), this rare Pax variant is so no longer. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-152171

When I purchased the piece I had not realised it was the R3 variant. It wasn't until the coin was in hand I was able to determine a correct attribution because of the worn and off flan reverse legend.

RIC 233 quotes your coin from the photofile of the Numismatic Institute in Vienna, unfortunately without reproducing the picture or naming the location of the coin itself, presumably in an auction catalogue or a public or private collection.

Maybe the Institute photo is of your actual specimen, published for example in an earlier G. Hirsch catalogue; or maybe it's from the same rev. and/or obv. die if it's a different specimen!

Yes, it is most vexing that no photo of the cited coin was provided. I was assuming at least same dies, but you may be correct - it could be my coin was in the Institute's fotofile!
