John III Vatatzes Hyperpyron
« on: December 17, 2018, 07:21:39 pm »
The top coin below is yet another example of a copper imitation of the hyperpyron SBCV 2073 of John III Vatatzes with a very unconvincing "gold" coating. It was sold by a well known auction house earlier this year as the hyperpyron, although how anyone can see this as gold (or even electrum) is beyond me.

The second coin is another example from the same dies offered on Ebay last year, and the third coin is an uncoated example from the same reverse die.

Examples from the same obverse die are common, and one is shown as the bottom coin here.
