Byzantine seals
« on: November 23, 2018, 07:40:27 pm »
At the northern border of the Exarcate of Ravenna we have recently found in open land this lead seal (1). We tried to find it in the Dumbarton Oaks Byzantine Seals Online Catalogue but we don’t find it even if, asking for seals with eagle, we have seen a lot of very similar seals. So we ask you if you could help us in his identification/classification/datation. And more can you tell us about the meaning of the eagle and the star in the byzantine sigillography.

In the same open land we fund also more recently an other poorly preserved small anepigraphic seal (2) but we are uncertain about its byzantine nature, don’t be it for the star, as we are about an other strange lead object with an eagle in the center (3) that we was unable to catalogue as a pilgrim badge. We wonder whether it is connected to seals.

Thank you in advance,

Alessandro

Can you post a better photo of the first seal? It is hard to see if there's a letter in the middle of the middle line.

Hi Gert,
let that my brother and I thank you for your nice interest in our seals.
For us it is of outmost importance to come to a classification/dating (even if approximative) to date back a site we are studiing that at present seems to be in the range of 1100 -1250 A.D.
Observing carefully the seal it seems that no dot or dash lie in the center of the middle line but in some pictures we have had a little doubt.
Tank you in advance.
Kind regards
