Claudius 2 Neptun Avg / Nertun avg
« on: November 11, 2018, 06:00:43 am »
It has been a while since I posted anything. I recently acquired a copy of the book 'The Cunetio and Normanby Hoards' (spink 2018) and my interest in third century coins was there again because of this book.
Browsing online I found this nice claudius 2 coin and tried to determine it. I couldn't find it while searching on the reverse until I noticed that NERTUN AVG isn't a known reverse :)

With the coin in hand it shows a N where a P should be. And looking at it with a magnifying glass I am still not sure if it is a die break or an engraver mistake. But I had to share this nice little coin:

Obv: IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG
Rev: NERTUN AVG (die break  /engraver mistake)

A (alpha) in Exergue

weight:  3,53 g.

Hi snorkelpaleis,
Nice coin, and good catch on the "R".

Nice error.  I have a coin from the same mint but the P (or R) is obscured by deposit.  I shall have to look closer.

Nertune was Neptune's younger brother.  He just sort of hung out in Neptune's watery basement all day playing "go fish" on the X-box.  One of the lesser known myths.
