Seeing as how it appears to only be about 1 inch in diameter, I doubt it's a mace head.  Something that small wouldn't have been able to inflict any damage. 

Perhaps a spindle whorl of some type of some type of jewelry piece?

It's a Roman glass bead, like the ones below. They come in all sizes.

Exactly.  A glass bead, Roman or post-Roman.  Not quite millefiori but a process that merges several glass colours.

Except for a few rare votive examples, mace heads are much larger and heavier and made of hard metal or stone.
