A new description for an old coin
« on: September 08, 2018, 02:06:18 pm »
Hi!

I want to share this coin:

Moesia inferior, Nikopolis ad Istrum, Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 17, 3.35g
obv. AV K L C - CEVHROC
       Laureate head r.
rev. NIKOPOLIT PROC ICT.
Altar with a basket in which a snake is coiling up
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018) 8.14.47.31 corr.
emiliyan_pavlov, Ebay, September 2018

This type is described as "altar, on which snake is coiling, head l." But the new coin has far the best preserved rev. I have seen. And now my suspicion that the old description is not correct is proven. It can't be a snake alone because there are structures above the altar not compatible with a snake alone. I have marked them yellow. Other structures are typical for a coiling snake. I have marked them red. Therefore I think it is a basket or a similar container in which the snake is coiling up. May be that my colouring is not correct. But I think the concept is clear.

Whast do you think? Every opinion welcomed.

Thanks in advance
Jochen

Dear Vladimir!

Thank you for your opinion. Do you think it is not an altar at all but a cista mystica?
