A strange "barbaric" imitation for Nikopolis
« on: August 17, 2018, 05:25:31 pm »
"Barbaric" imitation for Nikopolis, time of the Severans
AE 16
obv. [...] - [...] .P.AVG
      Unbearded head, laureate, r.
rev. NIKOPOLIT - PROC ICTR (L revers)
Hermes, nude, stg. l., holding in l. arm kerykeion and in extended r. hand purse, before
       him the cock
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018)

The rev. is known from Severus HrHJ (2018) 8.14.10.28. But the obv. is unusually. It reminds me of Domitian, an emperor long before the foundation of Nikopolis under Trajan. And the obv. legend with AVG seems to be Latin. Anyone who can shed light on this coin?

Thanks in advance
Jochen
