Strange cross on Nikopolis coin
« on: August 17, 2018, 10:27:38 am »
Dear friends!

Yesterday I won a coin on Ebay. I have added it as #021 on Nikopolis Addenda #6. When I have looked closer at the coin I saw a strange cross in a circular incus above the l. shoulder of Dionysos. I don't think it is normal corrosion and only caused by my imagination.

Anyone who has an explanation or an idea?

Thanks in advance
Jochen

With this pictures it is in my opinion impossible to say if it is caused by corrosion, a damaged die or something else. As soon as you have the coin in hand, I expect it to be far easier to tell what is going on.

No cross seems to be visible on the Imhoof specimen whose rev., probably from the same die, is illustrated in AMNG.

A counter mark or banker's mark or something like that?

A banker's mark on such low value coin seems to be unprobably.

Now I have the coin in hand and, damned, it is only corrosion!
