My coin of this weekend: Pius Minerva sestertius
« on: August 11, 2018, 07:16:27 am »
I just wanted to share one of my latest aqcuisitions:
ANTONINVS AVG - PIVS PP TR P COS IIII laureate head right /
no text except S - C in the field on either side of Minerva in her well known posture of being helmeted and about to throw a javelin and holding in her left hand a round shield.
RIC 779. The lack of patina is sometimes called 'Tiber patina' due to a long stay under water.

Frans

PS It is the elevenhundredth coin issued by Pius that enters my collection!

Congrats!

For obvious reasons I love the Minerva fighting reverse.

It's a coin worthy of celebrating such a milestone. By the way I'm not that far: 1054 Domitian coins for now, not counting the rest of the Flavian family.

Cheers

Alberto

All imperials rather than provincials, right?

So is that 1100 imperial coins with the portrait of Pius, or are you including in that number also coins struck under Pius, but with the portraits of Faustina I and II and Marcus Caesar?

Dear Curtis,
It's a handful of Provincials and perhaps twohundred in the name of his wife and children. There are doubles, so roughly 700 single Pius coins remain then. It is beginning to look like something.....

For comparison I counted my own collection: 596 imperial coins of Pius and family, including Antoninus as Caesar under Hadrian, Marcus as Caesar, Faustina I, and Faustina II struck under Pius.

There are not many common coins among those 596, since I mostly collect only rare types and rare varieties. On the other hand there are quite a few duplicates, since I gladly collect additional examples of rare coins I already have, if they are from different dies and can be acquired comparatively cheaply!

Dear Frans, It is the great number of Pius coins, congratulation... +++

Also, congratulate Curtis, as we know you always look after some interesting and rare coins  ;) :) +++

I'm not a Pius collector, but I have cc 500 pieces of Pius and the family coin, which are including cc 120 provincial issue...

of course, I have also some duplicate, and unfortunately, there are not so many rare coins included but all of them are nice... ;) +++

Till now in my gallery only 84 coins of Pius and Faustina the elder, but soon the number will be increasing...:)

The commoner coins I replace by better ones, if affordable, and I also look for rare variants like the one attached. It is a Pius/Aurelius denarius which has many varieties, but this one is extremely rare as Pius has an Aegis on his breast. The only other one was sold by Hirsch in 2012 and looks to be of the same dies. Coins as these make collecting interesting.
Thanks for your comments
As for the number of coins: I have been collecting for more than forty years

A desirable variant, since busts of Pius with aegis are generally very rare on denarii!

Unfortunately it is difficult to determine how many specimens of this variant may be known, since Strack used the same bust code for busts with aegis, busts with fold of cloak, and plain heads without either aegis or fold of cloak. So when he uses that code, we cannot tell which of the three varieties were actually shown by the specimens he lists.
