Please help identify Asian cash coin
« on: August 10, 2018, 11:42:56 am »
We received this coin in a group of Vietnamese coins and cannot identify it.
Thien Thong Hi Bao (in Vietnamese)
Tian Xi Tong Bao (Chinese)

It has no match or mention in Hartill The Historical Cash Coins of Vietnam, nor anywhere online.

In Hartill Cast Chinese Coins, the symbols match 16.68 - but this coin has a combination of script types, Tian in seal script, Xi and Tong in regular script and this is not mentioned.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

Schjöth lists this coin as Nothern Song (page 37, 479), but it is probably vietnamese (unofficial)

According to a sellers page it is Novak 47, another seller calls it Novak 47B, unfortunaltely I don't have this book.

But you can find the coin also here (page 12 top)

Thanks so much!

We too have Schjöth and also do not have Novak.

Greenbaum will be a good reference for us to use in the future.

Again, Thank you.

If you were kind enough to buy my latest book "A Guide to Cash Coins" on Amazon, you would find a section on unattributed Vietnamese coins like this.

Thank You David Hartill,

Yes! we have your book, A Guide To Cash Coins.

I did not find this coin in that book either.  There are similar large coins 2.148 and 2.149, with the same script as 16.68 in your Cast Chinese Coins.  I could not find one that matches the script exactly, with the Thien in seal script.  Joe prefers me to match scripts and etc. when researching these coins.

I did find the coin with this script in The Nguyên Hoà Era Coins of Vietnam (1533-1548 AD), a paper posted by Craig Greenbaum online.

I am so sorry I mis-identified you as the author of The Historical Cash Coins of Viet Nam in my original post; I was looking at your book when I wrote that and always think of your name when researching oriental coins.

Thanks for all you have done, researched and published.  It has made my work much less arduous.

Sincerely,

Kat Durand

I just identified a Vietnamese cash coin, missing from Barker and Toda, using A Guide to Cash Coins - Vietnamese, Group 1 (An Phap Type), Hartill Cash 2.822.
