Shapur I coin
« on: August 04, 2018, 11:54:10 pm »
Hi Guys

I exchanged a coin with a friend and although I am pretty much sure its good but like to double check with some experts here.. I am not at all experienced with sasanian coins specially since I can not read the pahlavi script on the coins to verify if it makes sense and is correct so I am hoping some experts who have experience in collecting and reading sasanian coins can help . I appreciate your help so much

My concern is on top right corner of obverse seems an edge has a closed crack it looks as if it was disconnected and somehow get attached by glue or solering etc or maybe it is indication of cast?

it is 4.13 gram and 26 mm

Should I add this to the fake coins reports as suspicious coin? if it is fake I like add it so other collectors be aware of it.

I always tell everyone that it is up to your own judgement to add or not to add a fake coin report. However, if you add this one, I will delete it.  I don't even see the crack you describe.

Sorry maybe image was not clear I attached another image and circled the crack.  it seems it is not deep into the coin and it seems it has been soldered or glued to the coin the softness and lack of details on bust also makes me think it is cast. Please advice if I can add to fake reports?

Do not add it to the fake coin reports.

Hi Arash,

I know Joe has already answered your question above.

I spent some time looking at photos of similar coins to yours as I do not collect Parthians so have limited familiarity with them.

There appear to be many other examples where the outer part of the flan has raised lines, metal, or is damaged in some way. Probably this part of the flan is more structurally prone to edge cracks and conditions of manufacture or of circulation.

I cannot see the part clearly in your photo but even if something was soldered back on  - and I do not see this myself in the above photos - this itself would not be enough to indicate that the coin is a modern forgery. I do not see any softer features etc. relative to the other examples I looked at.

Here are some of those I was referring to:

Thanks so much Peter. Interestingly yesterday as I was investigating and applied a little pressure suddenly the edge around the crack broke and I found the crystalline structure on the edge of crack. I glue it back and looks ok now but this shows the coin was heavily crystalline inside it which is a good indication for authenticity.

Regards,
Arash
