Latest Uploads to My Elymais Gallery
« on: July 15, 2018, 08:14:10 pm »
I’ve fallen way behind on photographing and uploading recent Elymaean purchases.  Finally found a bit of time, so here's a group of 19.  Since Elymais is such a specialized area even within the realm of Eastern coinage, I am following Stkp’s lead by posting a gallery update here in the Eastern coins section rather than in the gallery section.

This group consists of some silver and some bronze, and spans the Later Kamnaskirid Dynasty and the Elymais Arsacid Dynasty.

Starting with coins of the Later Kamnaskirid Dynasty:

Kamnaskires III, with Anzaze, c. 82/1-73/2 BC, AR drachm, van’t Haaff 7.1.2-1B

Kamnaskires III, with Anzaze, c. 82/1-73/2 BC, AR tetradrachm, van’t Haaff 7.1.1-2
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148032

Next is my fifth plate coin from Pieter van’t Haaff’s Catalogue of Elymaean Coinage:
Kamnaskires IV, c. 63/2-54/3 BC, AR hemidrachm, van’t Haaff 8.3.3-1.a (this coin)
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148033

Kamnaskires IV, c. 63/2-54/3 BC, AR drachm, van’t Haaff 8.1.2
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148036

Kamnaskires V, 54-32 BC, AR hemidrachm, van’t Haaff type 9.1 (subtype 3-3 or 3-4)
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148037

Moving on to coins of the Elymais Arsacid Dynasty:

Uncertain Early Arsacid Kings, late 1st century BC to early 2nd century AD, AE or billon tetradrachm, van’t Haaff 10.1.1-1
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148038

Kamnaskires-Orodes, early to mid 2nd century AD, AE drachm, van’t Haaff 12.3.1-1B
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148039

Kamnaskires-Orodes, early to mid 2nd century AD, AE drachm, van’t Haaff type 12.3.1-1B.f
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148041

Orodes II, early to mid 2nd century AD, AE drachm, van’t Haaff 13.3.2-1A.d
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148042

Orodes II, early to mid 2nd century AD, AE drachm, van’t Haaff 13.3.2-1B
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148043

The following little drachm is in rough shape, although the reverse diadem has held up beautifully.  It’s a special coin for me since it was a gift from a coin buddy across the pond.
Phraates, early to mid 2nd century AD, AE drachm, van’t Haaff 14.4.1-1C
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148044

My favorite coin of this group, despite the deposits:
Phraates, early to mid 2nd century AD, AE tetradrachm (rare), van’t Haaff 14.7.1-1B.a variant (pellet to left of anchor)
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148045

Phraates, early to mid 2nd century AD, AE tetradrachm, van’t Haaff 14.7.1-2
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148046

Four AE drachms of Prince A, van’t Haaff 19.1.1-1A
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148047
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148048
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148049
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148050

Prince B, AE drachm, Van’t Haaff 20.1.1-1B
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148051

Unidentified King, uncertain dates, AE unit (drachm?), van’t Haaff 21.2 variant (crescent facing downward toward pellets)

Nice work, Bob, Congratulation,  +++

p.s.

I have also some of this type of coins but without the "van’t Haaff" book the real description is delayed, ::)

What a great Elymaian gallery this has become, Robert! The best collection I am aware of. I just saw your posting of your latest acquisitions after returning from a trip and checked out he entire gallery again. I was especially impressed by your tetras (I love the 2 Kamnaskires-Orodes which you have had for a while and the 2 Phraates) and by the best specimens of late rulers from the new never-ending hoard.
Congratulations,
Schatz

Thanks for the nice comments, Schatz.  Your Elymais gallery, which I often revisit along with Stkp's and Howard Cole's, is far superior, but I am liking the way mine is slowly shaping up.  It's certainly a fun series to collect, with many remaining mysteries to solve (thus appealing to the numismatic detectives within us), and deserving of more attention from collectors than it seems to receive.

Another few modest Elymaeans here.

Prince A, AE unit – likely a drachm on a very tight flan – late 2nd to early 3rd century AD, van’t Haaff type 19.1:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148520

Kamnaskires-Orodes, AE drachm, van’t Haaff type 12.2-1-1B-D.  A big thank you goes to Stkp for the attribution assistance on this one.  I had been wavering between calling it a transitional type of Orodes II (VH type 13.1) or Kamnaskires-Orodes.  He provided a convincing argument for the K-O attribution:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-148521

Uncertain Early Arsacid Kings, AR drachm, van’t Haaff 10.4.2-1B.  Again a thank you to Stkp, who served as a sounding board in my attribution of this one.  This is an interesting coin, and was erroneously listed by two previous dealers as Kamnaskires V, van't Haaff 9.1.2-5.a.  In his book van’t Haaff states that in this period of Elymaean history – that is to say, during the rule of the Elymais Arsacid Dynasty – “the metal for all denominations is bronze; there are no longer any silver or billon coins.”  Since the book’s publication, however, some billon and, in this case, silver issues have been noted.  (An example of a billon coin from this period is here: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-122312)  No doubt the mis-attribution of the coin by the two dealers was in part due to its being struck in silver.  However, the pellet-in-crescent on the obverse, as well as the two crossbars on the anchor and the very distinctive rudimentary style (a big step downward in artistic merit from the coinage of the preceding Later Kamnaskirid Dynasty), place the coin squarely in the Arsacid Dynasty camp:

Just added two new tets:

Kamnaskires-Orodes, early to mid 2nd century AD, van't Haaff 12.1.1-3E.  My second example of this variety.

Kamnaskires IV, dated 58/7 BC, van't Haaff 8.3.1-1.  Wanted one of these for a long time, exhibiting an older portrait to go along with my van't Haaff 8.1.1B, which shows him a bit younger.
