Thasos Celtic Immitation
« on: July 03, 2018, 08:49:23 am »
So basically I learn what I can about a coin I purchase and when I get stumped, I figure it's worth asking a question of the group.

Recently I bought a coin from a reputable dealer that was listed as a Celtic Thasos imitation. It's not clear to me what distinguishing characteristics make this coin a Celtic imitation, as it looks pretty Greek to me. The coin is here:

My second question is on the translation of the legend on the reverse which is ΗΡΑΚΛΕΟYΣ / ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ / ΘΑΣΙΩΝ. I have the translation as Herakles, Sotiros, Thasion (Thasos). Is this correct? What is Sotiros? Thanks in advance!

Your coin looks more like a Roman military imitative than a Celtic imitative. Look in the Forum shop for more info.

ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ means savior.
