A new rev. description for Severus

Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 17, 3.35g
obv. AV K L C - CEVHROC
       Laureate head r.
rev. NIKOPOLIT PROC ICT.
Altar with basket (cista mystica?) from which a snake is coiling up
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018) 8.14.47.31 corr.
emiliyan_pavlov, Ebay, September 2018

This type was described as "altar, on which snake is coiling, head l." This new coin has far the best preserved rev. I have seen. And now my suspicion that the old description is not correct is proven. It can't be a snake alone because there are structures above the altar not compatible with a snake. So I think it is a basket or a similar container in which the snake is coiling up.

A new type for Caracalla

Caracalla, AD 198-217
AE 17(?)
obv. AV K M. - ANTWNINo
       Laureate head r.
rev. NIKOPOLIT / PROC IC
       Lioness walking r.
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018):
rev. No. 8.18.53.6 (for the type only)
          obv. e.g. No. 8.18.20.13 var. (has AV K M A)
       unpublished
Leu Numismatik, Web Auction 6, Lot 481, Dezember 2018

Was described in error as "Bear walking r." Because of the raised tail I think it is rather a lion than a panther. Because of the missing mane I vote for a lioness.

Yes, Jochen is the expert for Nikopolis. I don't collect these coins, but it's great when employ so much.

Thank you! The Coinage of Nikopolis is one of the most important tasks in my life.

@nummis durensis
If you take a closer look you can recognize the typical underjaw of a lion if his mouth is open. Because the mane is missing I think it is a lioness.
