Dear friends of Nikopolis!

Important:  All coins with a number higher than #041 are transferred to Nikopolis Addenda #7!

The chase goes on. This thread should be seen as supplement and integral part of Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov, The Coinage of Nicopolis ad Istrum, edition 2018.

#001

A new type for Nikopolis

Anonymous issue, 1st-3rd century AD
AE 12, 0.70g, 12.02mm, 180°
obv. Female figure, in long garment, stg. r.
rev. Crescent with 5 stars
ref. Not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018):
cf. No. 8.(?).0.48.6 (Tyche with rudder stg, l.)
rare, S+
coll. Hoeft

It is discussed wether these items are coins at all or rather temple tokens. Most of them are holed and on this specimen an attempted piercing can be seen too. Mr. Jekov has decided to add them to Nikopolis.

Best regards

A new "barbaric" imitation for Elagabal

Elagabal, AD 218-222
AE 18, 2.79g, 17.89mm
obv. [AV K ]M AVR - ANTWNINO[C] (R retrograd)
Bust, draped and cuirassed, laureate, r.
rev. NIKOPO[L]ITWN PROC IC
Crescent with 3 stars in the cavity
ref. a) not in AMNG

      c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018):

The style of the obv. resembles that of No. 8(?).26(?).14.1 (even the retrograde R!) and so I have completed the obv. legend.

Now when I have the new edition 2018 of Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov, The Coinage of Nicopolis ad Istrum, in hand I have seen that 2 corrections mentioned in this thread have already been done. So I have deleted the obsolete entrances.

This coin was published in Nikopolis Addenda #5 under #97, and is now listed in HrHJ (2018) as No. 8.14.1.21 in error. It is not Zeus but Serapis with kalathos.

A new type for Domna

Julia Domna, AD 193-211
AE 17, 3.10g, 16.52, 0°
obv. IOV DOM - CEBACT
       Bust, draped, r.
rev. NIKOPOLI - PROC ICTR
Hermes, nude, without chlamys, stg. l., holding kerykeion in l. arm and in extended r. hand

ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov

coll. Hoeft

This type is mixed up under No. 8.17.10.2 with another different type. But it should have its own number. It has a different obv. legend (IOV DOM - CEBACT instead of IOVL DO - CEBACTH) and a different rev. depiction (Hermes is nude without chlamys over l. arm).

A new rev. legend and a legend error for Severus

Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 18, 2.68g, 18.17mm, 30°
obv. AV KAI CE - CEVHRVC(sic!)
       Laureate head r.
rev. NIKOPOLITWN PROC ICTRON
Crescent with 1 8-pointed star in the cavity
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018):
rev. No. 8.14.48.44 var. (has ICTRO)
obv. e.g. No. 8.14.3.11 var. (without legend error)
coll. Hoeft

I read CEVHRVC. I think we owe this neat legend error to a Latin speaking engraver.

I think, No. 8.18.22.2 is exactly this type too. But the coin depicted in HrHJ (2018) is too worn.

An important correction for Commodus

Commodus, AD 177-192
AE 18, 2.94g, 17.51mm, 180°
obv. AVT KAI A - V KOMODOC
       Laureate head r.
rev. NIKOPOLITWN PROC IC - Tron (in ex.)
Tripod, central and l.  foot entwined by snake, head r.
ref- a) AMNG I/1, 1250 (1 ex., Wien)
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018) No. 8.10.47.7 corr.
coll. Hoeft

This is the first coin, where the unknown legend in ex. is decipherably. Until now the ex. was always outside the flan. But already the depicted coins have had remains of the legend in ex. Now the legend is completed.

In exergue a large T upside down, then a smaller PO upside down but only about half visible, the concluding N seems difficult to see?

One could wish for a clearer reading on this specimen too!

I think the T is part of the legend PROC ICT, not part of the ex. The central letter in the vex. is round, so it seems to be the O of RON. On the right side of O I see straight lines. That could be remains of N. So only the R of RON is missing. It should be on the left side of O.
