ANA Philadelphia August 2018
« on: June 26, 2018, 11:32:03 pm »
ANA World's Fair is in Philadelphia this year in August.  Apart from the issue of "Philadelphia in August"", is it worth a day- trip for an Ancients-only collector (one who goes to NYINC annually by walking)?  I have not been successful in finding a dealer roster and most reports seem to emphasize US coins and currency aspects.  Views greatly appreciated.

I was thinking of going as well, but I will not be sure  can make it for a few weeks.

As to a dealer roster, go to the ANA site. Scroll down to near the end of the page. Click on "Interactive Floor map". Once the map loads hover over the booths and you will see the name of the dealer in that booth.

If you plan to attend take some time and explore Philly. We are more than cheese steaks!  As a proud Philadelphia native let me mention some things in the guide books and some not.....

We are more than cheese steaks but...
if you have that tourist urge for a cheese steak the world famous locations are Pat's & Geno's. Opposite each other at 9th and Passyunk. order one from each and compare. As a Pat's fan a little advice - two ways to order "wit" or Wit out". "Wit" is steak, onions and cheese whiz. "Wit out" is no onions.  Use Uber parking is tough. Plenty of tables outside to eat at

The other famous philly sandwich... DiNic's roast pork at the Reading terminal Market across the street from the convention center. For dessert Termini's cannoli or Basset ice cream; both philly favorites.

Philadelphia has a wonderful art museum. Great examples of my favorites Cezanne and Duchamp. But walk around the building and check out the sculptures on the back lawn or a short walk east on the parkway to the Rodin Museum. You also have the Barnes Museum right there with another great collection of Impressionist works
However...
If you like your museums a little "odd" visit the Mutter Museum of medical oddities. It is unique. 19 south 22nd st. The hours are 10am-5pm. Last time I was there the power went out - left me standing in the middle of medical oddities in the dark- just a little creepy.

Of course we have the Historical area... explore a little east on 2nd and 3rd between Race and chestnut street - The "Old City" Neighborhood. Plenty of restaurants a few art galleries. One of my favorite restaurants is Farmica on 3rd st.

South of the convention center across Market Street is the neighborhood officially known as the "Gayborhood" Yes it is celebrated and marked with multicolor street signs. Great restaurant area. I love the little wine bar "Vintage" on 13th st. After a night of clubbing visit Insomnia cookie down the street - best warm cookie at 1 am. Down the block is a pizza joint whose name slips me but great "mac & cheese" pizza at 2am.

When you cross Market Street look up a Billy Penn on top of city hall. For the first 30 years of my life you were not allowed to build higher than the William Penn Statue. We broke that rule, but the Iron Workers of Philly have kept the tradition alive. On top of each new skyscraper they build they weld a miniature statue of William Penn to the top of the structure. Billy Penn will always be above the buildings

For the Beer lovers...Evil Genius Brewery up in the Fishtown Neighborhood.  Very little parking in Fishtown but a some unique joints. Loco Pez for cheap but good Tacos and Margaritas...or Murph's on Girard ave- an Irish pub serving excellent Italian food. Make reservations
Closer to the convention center Monks cafe on 16th st. Large beer list and a great Duck sandwich. Also Good Dog Bar on 15th for Burger and beer. Alas my puppy's picture is no longer on the wall- you'll understand when you visit Good Dog

If you want to shop walk Walnut street from Broad st to Rittenhouse square. Another hub of restaurants.

I haven't touch Northern Liberties, Fairmount, South Philly, Society Hill, Queen Village, Mayanuk or any of the other great Neighborhoods

If you haven't figured it out I was born and raised in Philly. We are not the screaming hooligans portrayed on the TV news. It's a city of great little neighborhoods with a rich cultural history that somehow get along famously with each other.

I was born in Philadelphia too, and lived there until 6th grade. It is a great town and is still my hometown (but I have a few hometowns). It is more than cheese steaks but, damn, cheese steaks are good. Last time we went we took the double-decker on and off bus tour. It was a good start.

Thank you for the tips. I had no idea I would be walking in the steps of numismatic giants along with the Founding Fathers!  I will only be able to get there Weds, but it is shaping up to be a full day.

Jim’s Steaks has the best cheesesteaks, in my opinion. My father-in-law swears by the $1.25 cheesesteaks that were from a food truck across from the admissions building at La Salle, however. I don’t know if it is still there (or if they are still $1.25) but I’m going to try and find it next time I’m down there.  The guys knows his steaks.

Molinari mentions the great Jim's Steaks down on south St.  Jump on the Broad street subway (orange line)at city hall two stops south to Lombard and South. East on South street for 8 blocks (maybe 10)

Along the walk stop and admire "Philadelphia Magic Garden" - can't explain it just look at the picture

Joe jogged my memory too---To travel the loop between the historical district, city hall/ convention center and the art musuem hop on the Philly Phlash Buses. You can't miss them they are Purple

About one block south of City Hall on the east side of Broad Street is the (current) Wells Fargo Bank building.  Between 1990 and 1996 when I worked for an IT company that ran the computer systems for Fidelity Bank, who then occupied that building, I had to travel to Philadelphia every other week for meetings.  My boss' office was on the front corner of the 4th floor overlooking Broad Street.

I am somewhat ashamed to say that in all those years I apparently never bothered to look up at the building or I would have noticed the artwork on the building depicting images of various early medals and coins, primarily from the Colonial and Federation periods.  What makes it even more embarrassing is that I collect coins from these periods !!  These shots were taken in April 2017 while I was in Philly for a coin convention.

And here's a bit of movie trivia.....this building was used in the 1983 movie "Trading Places" starring Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd as the headquarter of Duke & Duke Commodities Brokers.  As soon as the bank closed in the afternoon, the movie crews would transform it into the set for the interior scenes, all of which were shot at night.  By 8 AM in the morning the lobby had to be ready to open again for business.

Ah, that accounts for my current instinct to short frozen concentrated orange juice futures and use the proceeds to collect ancient coins....

It wouldn't be my dumbest investment.

Thanks for all the helpful ideas for Philadelphia.  I only had 10 hours in town yesterday, most of which were absorbed by a trend towards bankruptcy.
In no specific order, I would say:
> happy that more dealers at ANA World's Fair were ancient specialists or had substantial ancient offerings than I expected.  I had never been to such a massive event.
>still, ancients were less than 10% of total gigantic bourse.
>still mystified by modern coin collecting modalities (but those collectors are probably equally mystified about ancients).
>I met a few new-to-me dealers and collectors, all positive.
>the walk to find decent,  let alone good, coffee in Philadelphia is far, far too long.
>still do not grasp the concept of encapsulation and slabbing for most coins from a collector perspective.
>Philadelphia is an hour from NYC by train but about 3 hours by car.  Trains are good and you can have a drink on them while looking at your new acquisitions.
>live shows and internet presence can very much be complementary for professional dealers.
>coin pix to follow
Thanks again!

I walked the show today - meet some new people - over paid on a couple of coins which is a requirement at any show.

I did notice two members of a well know dealer eating what they claimed to be cheese steaks. Since the steak was on a SEEDED roll these could not have been Philadelphia cheese steaks. I suspect an out of state (Bulgarian?) food vendor somehow got in the center and sold FAKE Cheese steaks.

and you are very right about a good cup of coffee.
