Enigmatic coin from Nikopolis, help please --> Saitta!
« on: June 25, 2018, 03:00:41 pm »
Dear friends of Nikopolis!

Recently I got an enigmatic coin and need help.

Moesia inferior, Nikopolis ad Istrum, Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
struck under governor Aurelius Gallus?
obv. [AV KAI CE - PTI] CEOVHRO - C PER
       Laureate head r.
rev. [...LLO] NEIK - [.....] ICT
       in l. and r. field R - ON
Emperor, bearded, in military cloak, paludamnt over shoulders, stg. frontal, head l.,
resting with raised l. hand on spear and holding in extended r. hand globe
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov
F, corroded

(1) NEIK, R - ON in field and the probable ICT points to Nikopolis ad Istrum and style looks like Northern Greece too.

(2) CEOVHROS is not known for Severus from Nikopolis. It is known from Hadrianopolis,
     Pautalia and Tomis.
(3) PER is known from Gentianus, Auspex and Gallus.
(4) NEIK is known only from Gallus.
(5) Emperor with globe is known only from Gallus.

So I think it could well be Aurelius Gallus.
(6) Obv. legend. Gallus has the following obv. legends:
     AV KAI L CE, CEPT
AV K L , CE, CEP, CEPT and CEPT
     AVT L CEPT, CEPTI
I can' see for sure which legend could be on this coin. In front of CEOVHROC are 3
     letters, I think.
(7) Rev. legend. Gallus has the following rev. legends:
     GALL, GALLO, GALL(OV), GALLOV
On this coin I can see LLO

What do you think about this coin? Any hint is welcome.

Thanks
Jochen

Maybe not the emperor standing, but Mên, similar as on these coins from Saitta:

I think you can read CAITT on the reverse beginning at about 3:30 clockwise

Münsterberg, Beamtennamen p. 146 records a suitable magistrate's name on a coin of Julia Domna at Saitta:

EΠI AN[ΔPONEIKOV AP]X A,

citing Waddington 5179. Your coin would seem to confirm the extensively restored name given by Waddington/Babelon.

Just for interest, I have this Saitta coin type listed for the new book with the references:
BMC 42-43; SNG von Aulock 3098; Mionnet IV, 618. (Cousinery); SNG Munich 441; Leypold I, 1162; Waddington 5176; Paris 1065; Welzl 6287; Winsemann 1343.
It'll be no 85 in the new book.

Thanks for the references.

That is a coin I should have found! I overlooked Münsterberg's citation of the BM examples.
