Parthian silver!!!
« on: June 19, 2018, 01:34:00 pm »
This time and for change i took my chances with an unknown seller for a coin i found nice, it looks soapy to my eyes but for the rediculous amount i paid it does not really matter if it is a fake, it is 25mm and 11 grams, what are you opinions regarding authenticity?? Any opinion would be highly appreciated!

The low price may be explained by the fact that it has been holed and plugged.  I would need a sharper focused picture before I would venture an opinion whether it was cast or struck.  Oh, yes, and it is Parthian rather than Sassanid.

Weight is somewhat low. Compare to:

I compared it with hundreds of similar coins on acsearch and still can not decide, i do not like the surfaces of this coin but other than that it looks perfectly genuine!!! here is an example from Acsearch to compare!!!

Very difficult to say. Style, details, etc are all accurate. All Gotarzes II tdrs are made of billon metal and often have rough surfaces. Extraordinary is the low weight - Gotarzes II tdrs usually weigh between 13,5 and 15 gr.

For my part, I am concerned about details like what we see below.  I suppose the coin may be kosher and that the pitting/depressions could result from run-of-the-mill corrosion.  However, the way the motifs are broken apart here, as on Tyche’s gown, leaving almost exclusively high and low relief areas (two levels of relief, with no middle ground) – and with the high points looking perfectly smooth – just reminds me too much of some cast fakes I’ve seen.
