Unknown Oil Lamp Number 1
« on: June 11, 2018, 06:07:24 pm »
I've had this sitting around for several years in a cabinet along with other items. Don't know anything about it except it's an oil lamp of some sort. Measures 78mm x 105mm. Authentic? Age? Type?

I'm imagining no one has seen one like this before or something?  ??? Is it the color?

The style of lamp....large discuss with two small openings is often seen, but not being anywhere near an expert on lamps, I don't really know where it might be from, and I don't really see anything really matching in either of the two references I own, both of which tend to concentrate on the Levant.

It could be a generic "Roman" type lamp from just about anywhere.

Antiquities are a bit different from coins.  I have handled dozens of lamps but I would still have to search through books to identify it.  I could take more than an hour.  I have about three dozen lamps here that should sell but never find time to ID them (I have had them a couple years).  I can't help. Maybe you will get lucky and someone who has a similar lamp will respond.

It is a Loeschke type VIII Roman oil lamp.

Dated to 1st/2nd c AD.

Made throughout the Roman Empire.

Not clear from the photo what the stamped design on the central rondel is.

+++ Thank you too. I haven't been able to figure out the design myself. I've studied it from all angles and still can't figure it out.

North Africa, late 2nd - mid 3rd century AD.
Motif: Isis facing Serapis.

Perfectly authentic but a very common motif. The black marks are the remains of the slip. The brown stain round the filling-hole is rust from a wick-pin.
