Julius Caesar Lifetime Denarius
« on: June 10, 2018, 05:35:31 pm »
I have been looking for one of these for at least a year. I found one at auction and I was the high bidder!

I know that it has a large scratch through the head but I still think this is a great coin. It has a large flan, the entering on the portrait is excellent. The portrait itself is very well done, and the lettering on the obverse is very clear and easy to read.

Great coin. No attempt to embellish the portrait on part of the moneyer, which makes it seem close to the imperator`s real appearance.
I have added a portrait I recently got hold of (not my property, of course), because it also seemed quite realistic to me.
A bust in Berlin seems to resemble this portrait. I added it below.
The truth is, however, that the coin portraits are closer to his original physiognomy than any bust, because they do not idealize (not so small lips, a somewhat crooked, quite lengthy nose, a more protrudent Adam`s apple ...), following a republican tradition. The Berlin bust already shows an idealized portrait.

Many thanks Jay for the kind words.

@Germania Magna

Many thanks for the comments, and for the photos of the other denarius and the bust. I really like like that depiction of JC. I really wanted as veristic a portrait as possible.

Hi orf,

Congratulations on acquiring a portrait denarius of Julius Caesar! :)

It has an excellent lifetime portrait.

My portrait denarius of Julius Caesar also has a scratch on his head (scroll down, last coin):

Mine is also a posthumous issue.

My example below. Very similar to the Knobloch coin - same die pair, almost identical strike - but it isn't.
