Repaired Samos tetradrachm for sale in an US auction
« on: May 18, 2018, 10:36:31 am »
A lot has been said that silver coins can't be repaired without traces. Well have a look at the images, just next to the lion's left ear. The coming auction even notes the previous auction. Nobody noticed the repair?        :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

Wow ... that is a great repair ... but I am more of a fan for "not repairing" coins (I always appreciate a bit of grunge, or a flaw/test-cut on my coins ... it keeps them honest)

I can't see any flaws near the missing test cut.  Could either coin be a cast?

That flan crack would be difficult (impossible?) to cast.

The test cut was part of the ancient history of the coin. It was a fairly insignificant mark and I don't see the point of erasing it.

In the “investment world” it is the case that the closer to perfection, the more exponential the price rise. The repair wasn’t targeting collectors.
All historical inquiry is contingent and provisional, and our own prejudices will in due course come under scrutiny by our successors.

Hi,

It always surprises me that people mess with a high end coin with either a known pedigree or easily traceable through auction records. Neatly done, I have to saye, but the dings, nicks and cuts are part of the coin's story as others have already said.

Regards,

Mauseus
