Caracalla Markianopolis Tyche Euposia Revisited
« on: May 06, 2018, 02:11:44 pm »
We have recently posted a number of previously unnoted Markianopolis issues featuring Tyche Euposia and Ploutos; see https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=67849.200 and https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=67849.225, Replies ##215-29. But this post is concerned with the first Caracalla of this type to be noted, and possibly also the rarest and strangest, beginning with Jochen's example (AE27, 11.67g, https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=67849.125, Reply #135 = https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-78161, not in Pfeiffer), proceeding with slokind / Pat Lawrence's remarkable lighter specimen (AE24+, 8.6g, https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=34098.0), and concluding with my curiously light thin-flan specimen (AE26, 5.11g, the third photo below), purchased six weeks ago. The obverse beaded border at about 5 o'clock on my specimen is virtually all there is to confirm that my specimen is not a cast copy of Pat's; are they both high-grade casts of a third coin that no one has published? Thanks for any / all insights! archivum

All three specimens authentic, and not derived from each other, in my opinion.

Thank you, Curtis; very happy to hear it. Have you ever encountered a thin flat lightweight flan of this sort in large issues from Moesia Inferior?

Not that I can recall, but I haven't been particularly looking either.
