Hello,

I just found a coin in one of the lots I have and I'm not sure what it is.

Hi,

Can you please give weight and size also?
It looks like lead seal from Byzantine Empire, Iohannes, anthypatos, patricios, and eparchos. Around VIII century.

Regards,
alc

Yes that is a lead seal. However, the initial letter of the rev. seems to be pi, so it can't belong to a Ioannes. Possibly Peter? A photo of the rev. with the correct side up would help reading, whicht is 90 degrees turned to right.

In American slang, "to be the ticket" means "to be the answer."  Pogh_poor

In this case,
"this might be the ticket" means "this might be the correct identification"

Aha, then no, that is not the ticket. These are two different seals. The monograms on the obv. are standardized and occur on thousands of seals. The reverse is where the attribution has to come from.

I read ΠETP on the first line, which must refer to the personal name Petros. On the second line, the first letter is unclear. Then I read ΠATP followed by a vertical stroke, which is an abbreviation mark. This is Peter's court dignity of 'patrikios'. Below you can read CΠAΘ 'spath', which must refer to another court dignity, but which I am not sure because of the corrosion. Probably he was an imperial spatharios. I can't make sense of the last line.

Regards
Gert
