I have spent the last month attempting to attribute a lot of Japanese Kanei Tsuho. The diffences between coins are subtle, and the catalogs available to non-Japanese readers are far from complete. To put it mildly, these inexpensive coins are a real challenge, and I have been assisted in my efforts by the members of the Zeno website. I just uploaded three different varieties of Ishinomaki-sen (all with a blank reverse) to my gallery:

Photos below. I love the challenge and learning curve, although I have no doubt that these are not for everybody.

Thanks for sharing!  I started selling cash coins because I had a huge group of unattributed coins that I picked up in an estate. I was surprised to find how much I enjoyed working with them. It expanded my interests out of Europe to the rest of the world.

I still haven't finished working through the lot of Chinese cash that I bought here on Forum last year. most of which are Northern Song. My daughter is giving me Gorney's book on Northern Song varieties for Father's Day, so I will try to find the time to resume my study of that lot.

Here is the last of my Ishinomaki-sen. It is an iron coin with the mark sen on the reverse:

Hi,

I have long enjoyed cash coins and assembled a collection of over 300 Chinese, Japanese, Annamese and Korean pieces. Started in my early teens and every five years or so I rekindle my interest.

Regards,

Mauseus, Yours are very nicely displayed. My interest in the various series that I collect ebbs and flows as well. I only have a few Annamese but no Korean. I rarely acquire oriental cash coins other than in unattributed lots as I enjoy the attribution process. This is one of the very few aspects of numismatics that can be enjoyed in a big way for very little expense. Stkp

I just added two Genbun-sen, cast at Kameido Edo. The second one has an interesting casting flaw.

Thanks, Joe.

I just added five Takatsu-sen, cast from 1741. The identification of this series is easy because of the presence of the character 元 Gen on the reverse. However, the identification of the variety is a challenge -- especially since Hartill lists only five of the ten circulating varieties. I became more successful in identifying varieties once I stopped trying to match the coins to Hartill and just studied the differences between coins. The main focal point in differentiating varieties is on the 寶 ho character. The variety confirmation was made courtesy of the moderator of Zeno:

I recently added three Ashio-sen, cast between 1741 and 1745. Here, too, the identification of this series is easy because of the presence of the character 足 Ashi on the reverse. The challenge is in the identification of the variety; there are five but Hartill lists only two. As before, variety confirmation/identification courtesy of the moderator of the Japanese section of Zeno:

I also posted a Nagasaki-sen issued from 1767-1773. This one is easy because of the character 長 Naga on the reverse. There are no varieties:

Thank you, Joe. I picked up six random Kanei Tsuho at a coin show, which sparked my curiosity (I had not given any thought to these for years), prompting me to buy a lot of 100 coins. I am very pleased by the number of varieties that I am discovering in the lot. It is slow-going but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I just added another six coins, all Yottsuho-sen cast from 1708-1712 at the Kameido-mura Edo mint.  There are at least nine varieties of Yottsuho-hen, but Hartill only lists five and Jones only lists two. They are characterized by the hook on the right arm of 永 ei:
