If not part of patina - cleaning question
« on: February 05, 2018, 02:47:52 pm »
Does anyone know if the smooth flat stuff on the left side is part of the patina or is it something that can be cleaned off?
If it can be cleaned off - how?
Or is it something a professional would need to clean?
Thanks
John

Hi 10L,

I think the stuff at left is a flattening of the metal.

Yup, I had a lesson in degradation of buried coins. It's part of the coin and what happened while under ground.
I may be uninformed on some of these things - but I'm more learned than I was before posting this.
Regardless I'm happy w/ the coin!

Thanks everyone.

The fact that it is between, and over, the letters means that it is in theory removable.  But I suspect it would take a very precise chemical composition to remove that and not affect the base metal - and even that might not be possible.  So in reality nothing can be done.

At least the coin is not hopeless.  Still identifiable and in fact has some charm.

I think it could possibly be a re-deposition of metal that occurred as an electrolytic reaction,
either while the coin was buried, or, less likely, during the cleaning process.  I have some
coins from a salt environment with similar deposits.  It is a nice coin!

Whatever it is, it is just as attractive than the rest of the surface. There would be nothing gained by removing it.

The type in the first post is not a type that was silvered.

Actually I think it is.  The obverse shows a sceptre over the shoulder which likely means consular bust left, so likely one of the late 310s issues that are sometimes heavily silvered

I was referring to the coin in the very first post of this thread, which is the subject of this thread, not the coin with the consular bust.  The type in the first post is not a type that was silvered. It has S - C on the reverse.

Duh'oh!  You are right.  Sorry for not reading more completely.  Of course those were never silvered.
