I was just going through some Byzantine bronze coins in my collection and ran across this one that I had originally identified as an SB 1878.  After looking at a couple photos online, I think it might be an SB 1879.  I'm having a hard time believing that since it looks like the 1879 is so rare, so I'd like to find out what others think.

Weight: 4.45 grams
Max diameter:  31.2 mm  (average diameter = 28 mm)

Thanks in advance for your help!

Here is a link to another coin identified as an SB 1879: https://cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=85938

SCBV-1879 is my call.

The difference seems to be in SBCV 1878 the IC XC on OBV is at Christ's head and SBCV-1879 it is below the cross.  Yours is bellow the cross.

Thank you.  That's what I thought, too.

The CNG auction from back in 2006 implied that they knew of only 4 coins that existed of this type:
-- The two specimens known to Grierson (both in the British Museum)
-- The one from Rauch 73, 17 May, 2004, lot 1054; misattributed as an 1878
-- The one they were auctioning (CNG 72, Lot 2171)

Is anyone aware of others that have come to light since 2006?

Thank you, tk!

So - now the count is at 6 known.

Is this a coin that you own?  Or did you find it on the internet?

Thank you, Simon.  I've wondered the same.

I'm about to post something similar regarding 1878 versus 1880a.  I'd love to get your thoughts on that.
