I've not seen this
type suggested as a target. It is an AE
Sextans, 217-215 BCE, struck by the struggling
Roman Republic as
part of its semilibral reduction during the Second Punic War. Hannibal's invading force
had inflicted serious defeats against
Rome in 218-217 BCE, drastically increasing Rome's
military defense costs and interrupting flow of raw materials.
Rome had to cut the
weight standard of its bronze coinage in half as a result. This coin is
part of a collateral series of interesting
types struck at the same time as the
standard prow
types. This
weight reduction was soon followed by further
weight reductions as the war continued. The coin is an interesting
type, produced at a pivotal time and well worth including on a
Wolf and Twins theme list!
