collecting she wolf with twins
« on: January 19, 2018, 04:55:25 pm »
I've sort of hit a wall in collecting.  Thinking maybe she wolf with twins.  Is there much out there.  Looking around I see some but not a whole lot or am I missing things.  Would appreciate thoughts on the subject.  My budget is limited.  Thanks

Hi Bill, there is a republican denarius by Sextus Pompeius with she-wolf and twins along with the famous didrachm.  In the Imperial period there are a few more.  Antoninus Pius comes to mind and of course the Constantine commemorative types.  Not sure there are many more though.

Hi Bill,

Try searching 'She Wolf' on acsearch.info

Browsing through the results will give you an idea re diversity of emperors and types.
From a quick look, most appear to be the Constantine commemorative types Jay refers to above.

Thanks, I did that.  Most do seem to be Commemorative types with not a whole lot more.  Some thing will turn up.

I've thought about collecting the Constantine wolf & twins commemorative coins.

They probably exist from about a dozen different mint cities.

RIC lists them as coming in two sizes: a larger flan & weight from 330-335, and a smaller flan & weight from 335-37. In reality, they are found on flans of many different sizes & weights; generally speaking the earlier ones being larger & heavier than the later ones.

It seems that there are a number of marks found on the shoulder of the wolf -- various Greek letters, pellets, and even a scorpion. See the discussion here for further information: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=16593.0

Given the variables listed above, it seems to me that a very interesting specialized collection could be made of these coins.

Thanks to all.  I'm currently mulling this over.  Could make an interesting collection.  Bill

I think this would be a great series.  On a budget you could do Late Roman from various emperors and mints.  You can add Republican issues or big bronze provincial issues.  If you win the lottery you can do the aurei.

There are also imitative issues which are cheap but take a lot of work to find, like this one:

The only Roman coins that I actively collect these days are antoninianii of Gallenius and she-wolf and twins themed coins. I just acquired this fully-silvered beauty, which fits into both categories:  https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-143385

Nice coin.  Is it silvered or struck on white metal?

I've not seen this type suggested as a target.  It is an AE Sextans, 217-215 BCE, struck by the struggling Roman Republic as part of its semilibral reduction during the Second Punic War.  Hannibal's invading force had inflicted serious defeats against Rome in 218-217 BCE, drastically increasing Rome's military defense costs and interrupting flow of raw materials.  Rome had to cut the weight standard of its bronze coinage in half as a result.  This coin is part of a collateral series of interesting types struck at the same time as the standard prow types.  This weight reduction was soon followed by further weight reductions as the war continued.  The coin is an interesting type, produced at a pivotal time and well worth including on a Wolf and Twins theme list!

Roman Republic, 217-215 BC
Anonymous Semilibral "Collateral Series"
AE Sextans
Obv: Wolf and Twins.
Rev: Eagle standing right with flower in beak.
Ref: Crawford 39/3.
