CILICIA, Syedra. Hadrian Æ 24 Demeter standing
« on: January 12, 2018, 12:07:28 pm »
Dear cf,

A special new variant, not only the unlisted bust and obverse legend but also different style than we are used to know of Syedra minted coins.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=5735

i think i can read

ΑΥΤΟ ΑΔΡΙΑΝω ΚΑΙСΑΡΙ СΕ

Reference.
Cf. RPC III 2762.1 = SNG Levante 410 = CNG E-294, lot 485.

Obv: ΑΥΤO ΑΔΡΙΑΝω ΚΑΙСΑΡ CЄ. or ΑΥΤΟ ΑΔΡΙΑΝω ΚΑΙСΑΡΙ СΕ like RPC 2764 legend
Laureate bust right.

Rev: СΥЄΔΡЄωΝ.
Demeter standing left, holding torch and grain ears.

6.62 gr
24 mm

All the Best,
Eric

An interesting coin! Syedra is also a nice place to visit, I have been there in 2014.

The obverse legend might read ΑΥΤΟ ΑΔΡΙΑΝω ΚΑΙСΑΡ CЄB, although I see that RPC 2764 also supposedly has the odd KAICAPI legend.

Dear Lars,

thank you, but 2764 end's clearly on CE

RPC 2764 seems to be from the same obv. die, and the reading KAICAPI CE is reasonably clear in their photo (pl. 125), though CEB with the B off flan can't be entirely excluded.

Lars, why do you consider the form KAICAPI "odd"?

Curtis, thank you, indeed same obverse die I didn't see it

I meant unusual rather than odd, but checking RPC I see that the form KAICAPI is actually much more common that I thought!
