Great idea for a topic Sam!

I have shared this one, before, once, twice, perhaps now, thrice. It is a bronze coin of King Philip II of Macedon with the YE monogram control mark (note: control mark is described differently, depending on the reference).

It is my favourite 2017 purchase from FORVM and one of my favourite purchases of all time. It is also the subject of one of my favourite coin photos, taken on a compact camera before I bought a dSLR, after significant assistance and advice on photographing these coins from Doug Smith on the Coin Photography board.

Happy New Year to all!

Peter

For this year, this is it. I have a very specialized collection and I try to buy from Forum when something cool is available, This coin was just perfect, nothing I normally collect but I loved it.  The second coin I must have purchased fro Forum a decade ago, worn but beautiful and has never been replaced , Not expensive and I doubt if Joe remembers it but it remains one of my treasures.

Happy New year All.

The first coin here -- that of Severus Alexander -- is a gorgeous coin.
Coins from the last few months of Severus Alexander's life (TR P XIIII) are fairly rare and are not often seen.

Great coins everyone.  I was fortunate enough to get quite a few nice coins this year but this one has to be my best:

For years my primary ancient interest has been folles of RIC VI. I've also somewhat passively been putting together a "one nice/interesting coin per emperor set" as opportunities came by.  Altho at best a tertiary interest, I got serious this year and finally completed my 12 Caesars set but wanted something a little different than just denarii (and frankly am not interested in spending the money necessary to get uniformly nice examples of denarii).  So, my focus has finally settled on larger pieces, including eastern cistophori, and provincial coins with acceptable portraits or interesting types. Half of my set is likely to be replaced before I'm happy with it but there's no rush.

At any rate, I'm going to cheat and present two "best" or in my case "significant" 2017 FORUM buys: the very interesting counter-stamped Claudius upgraded a common as and the Thessalonian copper for the defied Julius Caesar replaced a small "Paduan" medal and finished the set for me.
