My Little Coin Tray Project

Been tinkering with the idea of making a coin cabinet but decided to start smaller.

Very nice!

How long did it take you to make?
Now that you have finished this project, what is next?

Peter

What kind of wood did you use?

It is kind of like a temple to the hobby, no??

Thanks for the comments.
It's made mostly from Basswood and some Balsa. I'm a bit of an arts and craft guy so I have alot of spare wood stock laying around. I still need to clean it up some more and add a few coats of enamel stain, but I've spent maybe 5-7 hours on this over a two week period.
It's a pretty simple design at this scale. To me, it's a small tribute to the hobby and the art it inspires.

Phil,

That is absolutely fantastic.

If you are not going to take orders how about some more photos and maybe measurements........

Thanks Shawn.
I'd love to make more of these and share them with those interested but that recquires a bit of spare time. I could draw out a rough schematic for anyone interested but it's basically a simple 4x4" design.
For the tray parts I used 3/8"by 1/16" strips. 1/4"dia. Basswood stock, cut at 2"for the 12 columns with a 3/8 sq piece added on top of each one to give form.. Columns are spaced 35mm apart. The roof section is two, 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 slabs- oversized to give overhang then sanded down a bit. The facade is 1"at its apex by 4". Most of the work is in the staining and sanding to get that nice finish.

Added a pre-stain pic.

Thanks, Phil A
