Hadrian Denarius Roma 119-22 AD Salus standing variant
« on: December 13, 2017, 02:49:20 pm »
Dear cf,

Here a variant, it should be
Salus standing left, feeding serpent, who is wrapped round an altar, out of patera with right hand and holding sceptre.

like here

Here we have
Salus standing facing left, holding scepter and sacrificing out of patera over altar. like on RIC 268

I think now that this an eastern mint, Salus has a spear combined with the differing reverse with the absence of the snake/serpent

mine has the same die pair on the NYC

I think the mint is Rome, and the type was always meant to show a snake rising from the altar.

It was a poorly conceived type, because the legend in field SAL was bound to obscure the snake meant to be rising from the altar.

hmm i tend to disagree, there is also the spear and altar being cut into the die very nicely (in my coin)
Strack 81 has two specimens the one with the spear is eastern the left one has no spear and a snake

did you see the NYC specimen?

I saw it. But SAL in field always made it difficult to render the snake in this type. The possible absence of the snake on one or two coins cannot convince me that a variant type was meant.

Dear Curtis,
I have revised my opinion, and I must agree with your explanation makes more sense than my way of thinking

i placed it under RIC 562
this coin noted  under 298
