Question concerning Iron Forger's Die
« on: December 11, 2017, 04:52:58 pm »
Ave!

A good friend found this the other day; not in hand so no size or weight. His pix, not mine.

As seen in the very blurry photo, this reverse die depicts a Roman deity or personification with legend COS III and it certainly looks to have been used on a forger's Roman denarius.

Just curious, but if any of you can help steer me to any past sales of such forger's dies, I will highly appreciate it!

Best regards,

Kevin

Nice piece!  COS III on denarii always has me thinking of Hadrian

I'd check the records of the high end auction houses.  If genuine it could be very valuable.  Conversely that makes it very worth forging (modern I mean).

Ave!

The die is now in my hands and it sure looks real/authentic enough to me... ::)

Copper alloy; 25mm x 26mm / 53.6gm

COS III; The goddess/female personification is holding a caduceus-topped scepter and a palm (?) branch.

I went all high-tech with the impression...Silly Putty! Click the photo for an enlargement.

Shawn, not sure where to start checking records of high end auction houses. Any suggestions?

Best to all,

Kevin

Maybe COS IIII Felicitas-Pax of Antoninus Pius was model.

Wow!!!!!  +++

Thanks Pekka, you are the bomb! Now that you pointed out the final I missed in COS IIII, I can see it clearly.

It is the reverse of RIC Vol III, 130, for sure. Felicitas standing left holding branch & caduceus.

It never ceases to amaze me how all the members here support other members such as I and for that kudos to all.

Your grateful friend,

Kevin

There is come tool like Coin Search or something that searches the postings of the bigger auction firms.  But I can't remember what it is as I don't use it.
