Quintillus portrait eye candy - PROVID AVG
« on: December 11, 2017, 01:32:58 pm »
Easily my favorite thing about Roman coins are the obverses; how they make us feel like we are looking right at the greatest men and women of the ancient world, right in front of us. I am very excited to finally nab a good portrait of Quintillus, who is notorious for his lackluster portraiture! Quintillus has long been one of my favorite obscure emperors, perhaps for how little we know of him, and the rather unfortunate circumstances of his brief reign, ultimately forcing him to take his own life to avoid civil war.

IMP C M AVR CL QVINTILLVS AVG, radiate and draped bust right
PROVID AVG, Providentia standing left, holding sceptre and wand; globe at foot, left (should be a T in ex.)
Rome mint?
Not in RIC, Giard 10259 (per Wildwinds)
Rare

Feel free to post your best or favorite Quintillus coins here as well!

I read the legends:

IMP C M AVR QVINTILLVS AVG

PROVIDEN AVG

The style of the great obverse portrait, very realistic, and the reverse legend rather point to the siscian mint.
