Marcus Aurelius AR Denarius - Jupiter Seated L / RIC 381
« on: December 11, 2017, 10:53:22 am »
Hi all,

Really excited to add this Marcus Aurelius denarius to my collection.

M ANTONINVS AVG GERM SARM, laureate head right
TR P XXXI IMP VIIII COS III P P, Jupiter seated left, holding Victory and sceptre.

This was kindly identified as RIC 381:

It seems to be a bit elusive, however; I can't find an image of another RIC 381 anywhere online.  Has anyone seen one before? Closest I can find imaged is RIC 371, same coin but with IMP VIII instead of VIIII.

Must be scarce, same here only found RIC 371 on acsearch site.
Super style and full flan and strike, can't desire anything more in a coin.

TR P XXXI IMP VIIII is a rare issue: only four such denarii, with three different rev. types, in Reka Devnia hoard.

This Jupiter seated type: one specimen in Reka Devnia with IMP VIIII, five specimens with IMP VIII, so scarce with IMP VIII too.

Your reverse die looks like it might originally have been engraved with IMP VIII, then a fourth stroke was added to the numeral, obscuring what had been the top of Jupiter's scepter, when news of the ninth acclamation reached Rome.
