Published Alexander gold stater for sale at auction
« on: December 08, 2017, 02:49:07 am »
Is published in BSCC Bulletin on Counterfeits BOCS Vol 8 No.1/2 1983 Page 9 Fig 3

http://forgerynetwork.com/asset.aspx?id=NdjExAngUKA=

The obverse die was used in combination with different reverse dies from different mints

http://forgerynetwork.com/asset.aspx?mode=6Q/zOXMHeZ0=&id=DyO2SyjcYKI=

http://forgerynetwork.com/asset.aspx?mode=6Q/zOXMHeZ0=&id=N4EY0tXFFF4=

The reverse die exist in combination with different obverse dies, too (see same BOC).

The gold colour is wrong, modern gold, easy to detect!

Here is a reverse die linked fake (I had notified the dealer and it was withdrawn some days ago)
published in IBSCC Bulletin on Counterfeits BOCS Vol 8 No.1/2 1983 Page 9 Fig 5

http://forgerynetwork.com/asset.aspx?id=JdP~x~cU3LrHo=

And  IBSCC Bulletin on Counterfeits BOCS Vol 4 No.2/3 1979 Page 39

Again gold colour is wrong !

I was browsing through acsearch et voila another of these fakes sold at auction.
Style is too crude, too.
And other problems see BOCS 1983

Edit found another one sold at auction

" From a series of 5 inter related die links. The head is the style of Babylon, the letter iota, however should read MI. "

And another one slabbed by NGC

Another BOC published fake sold at auction Babylon

IBSCC Bulletin on Counterfeits BOCS Vol 1 No.1 Page 10 Item 5

http://forgerynetwork.com/asset.aspx?id=0ISPmDe1zT0=

From a series of die struck fakes, published in the above bulletin. Some have a somewhat burnished appearance, but many have a semi matt finish and others a readily recognisable reddish tone or surface deposit. Sames dies as nos 3 and 4

+ 2 more fakes belonging to my first post

+ another die linked (my second post) fake now from Lampsakus (picture 5)

Some more published fake staters sold at auction

Picture 1+2 IBSCC Bulletin on Counterfeits BOCS Vol 22 No.1 1997 Page 11 Fig 5a

IBSCC Bulletin on Counterfeits BOCS Vol 1 No.3 Page 61 Item 4

Some of this fakes have been polished or have red encrustration which makes them look not natural and suspicious, but wrong style, fabric, die links, metal (gold alloy) etc. are the reasons why they are fake + condemned by IAPN

I note the BOCS reports date to 1983 and 1997 respectively.

Is it likely that all examples entered the market more than twenty to forty years ago, or are they still being produced today?

All historical inquiry is contingent and provisional, and our own prejudices will in due course come under scrutiny by our successors.

Another one of these fakes

IBSCC Bulletin on Counterfeits BOCS Vol 1 No.1 Page 10 Item 4

http://forgerynetwork.com/asset.aspx?id=CDUt1C0aIKU=

Die links Lampsakos, Amphipolis and Babylon

I think that the BOC condemnation should be lifted, then my example in silver would be unique and really precious (paid 10 Euro for it to a Greece jewellery seller who sold it as fake for jewellery).

That would be much easier than withdrawing this tourist fakes and refunding the buyers. ^^

One thing is notable, even diagnostic, on all examples - the extended nose guard on the helmet. It extends beyond the norm found on authentic coins. On some, it extends the entire facial body of the helmet! It suggests that whoever engraved the dies was unfamiliar with the basis of design of the Corinthian helmet.
All historical inquiry is contingent and provisional, and our own prejudices will in due course come under scrutiny by our successors.

Next one of these fakes current for sale by one US auction house (picture1)

"The missing M in the left reverse field and the crude monogram in a wreath below Nike's left wing are two stylistic indications that this is a contemporary imitation.
Question about this auction?."

So contemporary imitation are die linked to other mints and die linked to taht many other dies, lol ;)

picture 2+3 obverse and reverse sold at ebay some years ago
