Hello,

A new coin in my collection, a nice SBCV 1173 of Constantine IV, 16,26 g / 32-35 mm

Perhaps not a so nice coin, it's possible a fake, perhaps not ! :

It is very hard to judge a coin by just a picture, but I wouldn't buy this coin if it was offered to me.

I have a Constantine V, but not a sweet Constantine IV (congrats on the new addition)

Do you think there is a problem with the metal beneath the corrosion, or are you concerned about its authenticity? I have no expertise in Byzantine coins- I just thought it looked nice.

No nothing to do with the corrosion.
I have studied quite a few specimens of this type and here I have a strange feeling.
As I said, I hope I am wrong.

When I look it for the first time I have also a strange feeling, but finally I think every thing is ok with this coin, but I post it on the forum for sharing feeling of everyone

Dear Eric!
I didn't mean to upset you, but it looks like you got a modern fake. Judging my macro photo, it is made not by casting, but by the method of hammering from a carved dies. You probably bought it on eBay from Cyprus seller? Here is a photo of a coin from the same workshop. And, it seems, is minted from the same pair of dies. I'm still amazed at how skillfully forged corrosion. Perhaps it is artificially induced by chemicals. Be careful on eBay now, I've seen regular throwing of fantasy and imitative fakes.

Argh ! Thank's a lot byzantofil , it's now evident. So I'm surprised a little of the quality of these modern fake !

This is the same coin. Compare the spots of "corrosion". The only difference is in the fallen piece below. Judging by your macro photo, it is precisely the stamping, not the cast copies.

Thats really pathetic, why dosent someone report seller on Ebay? He listed it under category of ancient Byzantine coins, also in description he states it is authentic coin.

I post today a fake report on ebay on this coin, hope the seller will be banish on ebay, but I think he will create soon a new account !
Perhaps I had to buy it and after destroy it

So he sell a lot of fake !
