Bare Head Vespasian COTD
« on: December 05, 2017, 06:33:37 am »
2017 has personally been a good year for the acquisition of 'grail' coins ... and another one just arrived. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-141699

Second known example of a truly rare Vespasian denarius. Santa came early. :)

Yes, it's fairly common in the Flavian era.

Counter clockwise legends on the denarii are seen at Rome beginning in 73 and continuing until 83.

Any theories on why legends where sometimes counter-clockwise?
Why is it just the obverse legend on your coin - the reverse legend is still clockwise?

Peter

To be honest, I have never heard an adequate explanation for it. I wish I knew!

To be honest, I have never heard an adequate explanation for it. I wish I knew!

Unfortunately, in this hobby, much like in life, we sometimes have to resign to the fact we might never know the answer to all things...

Sometimes the explanations for why something are quite mundane. If I reflect on some of the decisions I have made in my life, there are times when I have done something (e.g. getting out of a particular side of the bed one morning), just because I did, not because there was some underlying strategy or framework which led to me doing said activity. But to a curious alien observer they might think there is something more to it!

I do notice when we discuss coins, that we put everything under a forensic lens and in some cases, hold some things to be more significant than they actually are, but I suppose it makes it all the more interesting!

It happened more often than it should have in 2017. I doubt it will be so in 2018!

I think you are quite right. For instance, I've searched in vain for reasons why the Vespasianic mint of Rome chose some of the antiquarian reverse types that they did. Were they useful as a propaganda message or just randomly selected? I fear I shall never know!
